Spring Flowers: Dogwood, Waratahs & Hydrangeas

The Best of Spring Flowers: Flowering Dogwood, Waratahs and Hydrangeas

There’s something about Spring that just makes you want to fill the house with flowers. The days get a little longer, a little warmer, everything starts to feel fresh again, and suddenly there’s colour popping up in front gardens across Melbourne.

It is the season we look forward to most and when some of our all time favourite flowers are at their peak! From the delicate beauty of flowering Dogwood to vibrant Waratahs and the big, fluffy blooms of Hydrangeas.

So, if you’re looking for a little spring flower inspiration (or just an excuse to treat yourself), here are three of our favourites to put on your radar this season.

Dogwood - a Spring flowering masterpiece (according to us!)

Blooming in early Spring, Dogwood is here for a very short time and we make the most of it while we can! It's tall delicate branching structure with gentle blooms make for a natural appearance that feels both refined and relaxed.

Flowering dogwood (Cornus) is a spring favourite for its delicate, almost ethereal beauty. With its graceful branches and soft, petal-like bracts, dogwood brings a sense of understated elegance to the season.

Why we love it: We love it for wedding installations and for adding texture and structure to vase arrangements. It's perfect for creating a garden-inspired aesthetic. Best styled in a tall narrow vase, as the centrepiece to a room or table setting.

Waratahs

Now, Waratahs - what more needs to be said?! There are few flowers that can compete with making a statement quite like them. These bold beauties are hard to miss, with their striking red blooms and a whole lot of personality. They bring that gorgeous pop of colour to the season and look pretty spectacular all on their own. No fuss, no frills, just a seriously good-looking flower.

Waratahs are native to south-eastern Australia and although the vibrant reds are what they are best known for, they can also be found in pink and white varieties.

Why we love them: Their bold, strong and striking, long lasting and unmistakably Australian. Great for displaying on their own to show them in their full glory, or paired with pinks and pastels for a softer look.

Hydrangea

Our favourite Spring bloom of them all. The colours, the fluffiness, the romance - swoon!

Did you know hose big, fluffy clouds of flowers have a little secret… They can change colour! Some hydrangeas can shift between pink and blue depending on the pH of the soil they grow in. More acidic soil tends to produce blue blooms, while more alkaline soil often gives you pink ones. Nature is pretty clever, hey?!

One flower, hundreds of little blooms! What looks like one big, beautiful flower head is actually made up of lots of tiny individual flowers.

Why we love them: They're total show offs, making them a favourite for everything from soft, romantic arrangements to big, statement-making blooms. And honestly, is there anything better than a big bunch of hydrangeas sitting on the kitchen bench?
